Some Basic Info

My series of works focus on the design and production of pet supplies and toys, aiming to delve deeply into and master the skills and techniques related to fabrication.

The choice of this theme is no accident. The cat and dog in my home are not just my loyal companions, but also emotional anchors for me. They play a significant role in my life, offering countless unforgettable moments and warm support. Due to my profound affection for them, I aspire to design and create both fun and practical items for them. This endeavor not only challenges and enhances my skills but also embodies my endless love and gratitude towards them.

About me

Who am I?

Hi! This is Jindi Chai.

What am I studing?

I am a sophomore student at NYU IMA and want to learn knowledge about fabrication.

What do I have?

A super cute little dog 🐕 and cat 🐈 !

Where can I be found?

This is a simple 📦

This box is my first attempt after learning about fabrication. Although it doesn't closely align with the theme I set, it holds a special significance for me. Throughout the creation process, I encountered various challenges, such as the difficulty in carving due to the hardness of the wood, and the uneven marks left at the bottom when hollowing out with an electric drill. However, despite these imperfections, I believe this represents a positive start in my exploration of fabrication techniques.

🦴 for 🐶 * 5

Compared to my first project, my second series of works reflects much experience gained. I chose to make five wooden bone toys for my dog, as I observed that it has a particular fondness for wooden toys. Learning from my previous work, I specifically selected softer balsa wood for carving, making the entire carving process much smoother. This series not only demonstrates my improvement in craftsmanship but also showcases my thoughtful consideration in material selection.

🪞 for 🐱 & 🐹

In my third creation, I delved into the potential of laser cutting, crafting a unique set of mirrors. Inspired by the cat and hamster, two animals that represent a distinct predator-prey relationship in the ecosystem, the larger mirror portrays the image of a cat, while the smaller one depicts a hamster. This intrinsic dichotomy in nature imbues my work with a striking contrast and depth. What's even more intriguing is that for pets, mirrors are not just everyday items but also a novel plaything. They often exhibit amusing reactions in front of mirrors, unable to recognize their own reflection. This phenomenon adds an additional layer of whimsy to my piece.

🐶 waste bag dispenser 🗑️

My fourth creation is a unique dog waste bag dispenser, inspired by the widely recognized Pokémon Pokéball. This piece marks another exploration of laser cutting technology on my part. To faithfully recreate the spherical appearance of the Pokéball, I employed a layered approach, meticulously stacking thirty layers of acrylic sheets into a cohesive sphere. This process not only posed a challenge to my Illustrator drawing skills but also provided immense learning and refinement. Although I encountered minor setbacks during the crafting process, such as miscalculations in the space allocation for the switch, I am extremely pleased with the final result.

🐱 teaser & scratching board 🧶

This is the fifth and final project for my course. I designed and crafted a toy that combines a cat scratcher with a teasing stick, delving deep into the design and fabrication of mechanical motion toys. I used wood for the main body and incorporated a wooden mechanical structure to achieve the side-to-side swinging motion of the teasing stick. During the actual assembly, I faced various challenges. For instance, the precision of the mechanical structure was crucial for the gears to mesh properly. Additionally, figuring out how to seamlessly connect the metal teasing stick with the wooden main structure and ensuring its smooth rotation posed some difficulties. Although this work remains a demo version, it has largely realized the functions I envisioned. Given more time, I would aim to refine the overall structure and use superior materials to make this model truly suitable for pets.
